Nuclear Safety Analysis for The Shelter Object
Period: 2001
Customer: Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), USA
Beneficiary: Shelter Object of the Chornobyl NPP
The possibilities for initiation of a self-sustaining chain reaction in case of man-caused and/or technological impact on fuel containing masses (FCM) were assessed. Various situations pertaining to constructions collapse and FCM flooding were simulated. The calculations performed confirmed the conclusion about severe undercritical status of FCM located in the most hazardous, from a nuclear safety perspective, room 305/2 in the Shelter Object. During lava-like FCM simulation, homogeneous pattern with various FCM densities and heterogeneous pattern with fuel pellets random distribution and including FEs fragments were used.
