Nuclear experts of Ukraine and Russia are solving common problems
On July 19-20, 2007, the technical meeting of Ukrainian and Russian atomic scientists devoted to the issues of preparation and conduction of the comprehensive engineering and radiation surveys of power units was held in the Chornobyl Center (Slavutych) and at the Chornobyl NPP.
The representatives of the Chornobyl Center, “RosEnergoAtom” Concern, NNEGC “Energoatom”, nuclear power plants of Russia and Ukraine took part in the work of the meeting.
The participants of the meeting concentrated their attention on the urgency of engineering and radiation surveys during the decommissioning of nuclear plants’ power units. The experts of the Chornobyl Center shared their experience on preparation of similar surveys and creation of the corresponding computer data on their base.
Speakers emphasized that timely conduction of the surveys was an important condition for successful implementation of works for NPP units decommissioning.
The issue of preparation of nuclear power units to the decommissioning is important both in Ukraine and in Russia. It is explained by the fact that in both countries tempo of putting nuclear power units into operation was very quick in 70th–80th of the 20th century. And, correspondingly, the design life time of the units is coming to its end practically at one time.
The speakers representing Ukraine and Russia focused their attention of the attendees on the problematic issues of spent nuclear fuel management and on the issues of the radwaste interim and long-term storage.
On July 20 the work of the meeting was continued at the Chornobyl NPP.
