Consultants Meeting in IRL on Establishing a Radioecology Laboratory in Iraq
During 01 – 12 February, the international consultants meeting dealing with the issues of establishing a Radioecology Laboratory in Iraq was held in the International Radioecology Laboratory (IRL) of the Chornobyl Center (Slavutych).
The consultants meeting was organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Chornobyl Center.
The meeting participants also include representatives of the Iraqi Ministry of Science and Technology, Texas Tech University, and U.S. Department of State.
In the course of the meeting, the Memorandum of Understanding for Scientific and Technological Cooperation between the Iraqi Ministry of Science and Technology and State Scientific and Research Institution ‘Chornobyl Center for Nuclear Safety, Radioactive Waste and Radioecology’ was approved.
The draft agreement between Iraq and Ukraine on assisting the Iraqi side to establish a National Radioecology Laboratory by conduction of training courses for the Iraqi specialists and their training on use of laboratory techniques and measurements of radionuclide activity in environmental samples was discussed.
The issues dealing with the specific equipment and personnel needed to establish the laboratory, as well as database and quality assurance systems management were discussed during the meeting.
The international meeting was held in two stages and lasted for two weeks. The meeting participants listened to and discussed reports, visited the Chornobyl NPP, Shelter Object observation site, the towns of Prypyat and Chornobyl.
