Assistance to the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection in preparation and conduction of the international emergency protection training in the Chornobyl exclusion zone, Ukraine, on 24 September, 2016
The Customer: German Federal Office for Radiation Protection
The Objective: preparatory and organizational activities for the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection to conduct the international emergency protection training in the Chornobyl exclusion zone, Ukraine.
The project included performance of a series of organizational and technical activities during the preparation and conduction of the training.
The preparation to the training included a layer-by-layer (5 cm) soil sampling to the depths of up to 30 cm on three sites; 11 sampling points in total. Also, the samples were processed and specific activity of 137Cs was measured by a gamma spectrometer. In-field gamma survey of two sites was carried out within 4×4 m grid and at an altitude of 1 m from the ground surface for the comparative measurements; the working dimensions were not less than 40×40 m. The measurement data were processed and a report with the proposed points for comparative measurements and their coordinates was prepared. During the training, we accompanied the groups to the training sites and along their travel routes throughout all training days (basing on the agreed schedule). We also prepared comparative measurements of mobile laboratories at one site, inclusive of radiation safety arrangements for the transport.
