Study of Sr-90 and Cs-137 Characteristic Distribution in Small Mammals’ Organisms
Start: 2001
Customer: Texas Tech University (USA)
Objective: study peculiarities of radionuclides distribution in small mammals organisms depending on sex and age groups.
Results of the research:
- It was found out that most of 137Cs total content is contained in muscular tissue (36.8-39.4%), the less of it is in gastrointestinal tract (20.9-21.9%), and still less 137Cs is in skin. 137Cs content is considerably less in other organs.
- 90Sr distribution is characterized by marked osteotropic effect: 82-84% of radionuclides total activity is in bones. However, a considerable part is found in tissues, gastrointestinal tract, and skin (3.3-6.6%).
- As far as the average values in the whole body are concerned, the highest concentration of 137Cs activity was found in skin, spleen, eyes, and the lowest concentration was found in skeleton, brain, heart and in adipose tissue of males. At the same time specific 90Sr activity is considerably higher in skeleton and much less in eyes and spleen, in other organs it is still lower.
